GAMANTONG CAVE

 


Gomantong Cave is situated in the district of Kinabatangan with 3,297 hectares width.  Gomantong Cave is managed by Sabah Wildlife Department according to the system of ‘The management of Edible Birds Nest in Sabah’.  It is divided into 2 sections: Simud Hitam Cave and Simud Putih Cave.  The ceiling of the cave entrance reaches up to 300 ft.

 

Getting there: Sandakan is about 318 km away from Kota Kinabalu and usually takes 5 to 6 hours’ drive.  From here, it is 1.5-hour drive to the caves. Bus leaves Sandakan town but it does not stop directly in front of the main entrance. Various tour operators around Sandakan and Sabah offer packages to Gomantong so you might want this option instead.

 

When to go?

Nest are collected twice annually. Therefore, the suitable time to visit Gomantong Cave is between February and April, and between July and September.
