SEPILOK ORANGUTAN REHABILITATION CENTRE

 

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre (SORC) started in 1964 as rehabilitation for baby orangutans. It is under the administration of Sabah Wildlife Department with aims of returning orphaned, injured or displaced orangutans back into the wild. The centre is situated on the east coast of Sabah (Sandakan district) and covered over 4,294 ha of the Kabili Sepilok Forest. You can also visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) which is just neighbouring to the centre.

 

When to go?

Orangutan feeding time is at 10.00am and 3.00pm. The exhibition hall is opened daily expect for Friday from 9.00 am till 4.30 pm. Other activities that tourist can do is exploring the nature trials and learn about nocturnal animals.

 

Entrance Fee:

Adult               : RM 5.00        (Malaysian)

                          RM 30.00      (Non-Malaysian)

Children          : RM 2.00        (Malaysian)

                          RM 15.00      (Non-Malaysian)

 

Getting there: Many organized tours leave from around Sabah at varying prices. Public bus departs from Sandakan taking approximately 45-60 minutes. Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan bus can also drop you at junction Jalan Sepilok, around 2.5km from the Centre.  Journey approximately 5 hours from KK.  Taxi are usually available outside the centre (RM40 to Sandakan)
